2. Who the Program Could Serve
The service is organized into age groups so mentoring is appropriate to each young person's developmental needs.

Confidence building, social skills, positive role models, school engagement, and structured activities.
Adolescents: ages 12–17
Identity and self-esteem, healthy relationships, decision-making, academic goals, and coping with life challenges.

4. Important Steps Before Launching
Because the program will serve minors, safeguarding must be part of the service from the beginning.
- 1Establish a written safeguarding policy covering child abuse prevention, reporting concerns, boundaries, confidentiality, and emergency procedures.
- 2Screen and train mentors, including appropriate background checks, reference checks, and training in child protection.
- 3Obtain parental or guardian consent for minors, along with the young person's assent where appropriate. Establish separate consent and privacy procedures for participants aged 18–20.
- 4Create a mentoring agreement outlining responsibilities, communication rules, meeting arrangements, and program expectations.
- 5Define the scope of service. Make clear that mentoring is supportive guidance and is not a substitute for licensed therapy, medical care, or specialized child protection services.
- 6Check local requirements. Depending on your location and how Rise and Thrive is structured, you may need to review business registration, insurance, youth-serving program requirements, mandatory reporting, and applicable background-check rules.
